Transforming Berkhamsted School into a state-of-the-art teaching facility was no small feat. Bidwells was brought in to help turn the client’s vision into reality, with our first task being to masterplan the entire site-wide development at the school, ensuring that every detail was meticulously considered.
Once the plans were in place, we took on the role of project manager, overseeing the construction process from design to handover. The ground conditions presented major challenges. The site sat on a former gas works with heavily contaminated soil, requiring a £5m remediation programme over nine months. We also implemented a site-wide geotechnical enhancement strategy to address soft soils, mixing cement into the ground to achieve the required bearing capacity — a complex but essential process for the stability of the new three-storey sixth form college.
Meanwhile, the site’s rich history came to light during the redevelopment, when experts from Icknield Archaeology uncovered a series of air raid shelters believed to date back to 1940/41. This unexpected discovery added a layer of historical significance to the site, further enriching the narrative of the school’s evolution.
The result is a remarkable educational facility that combines innovation with purpose. The building features spaces that emulate modern collaborative workplaces — including the Future Zone, a dedicated workspace for aspiring entrepreneurs, and classrooms designed around the Harkness Model, which supports student-led discussion and deeper independent learning.
The new sixth form building is now operational, with Year 13 students already making the most of their inspiring new environment. We are proud to have delivered this complex and ambitious project, working closely with the client to navigate technical and logistical challenges, while maintaining the integrity and vision of the scheme. Delivering a purpose-built space designed to prepare students for the next stage of their educational journey — fostering active learning, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.
