Wood Green Common Conservation Area

Following years of refusal by Haringey Council, we were instructed to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the area for our client, outlining its historic context.

We were also asked to recommend an architect to the client to design the new scheme. From the outset, we were mindful that the project needed to be an improvement or continuation to the existing character of the area. We also had to demonstrate that the existing music studio had no significant historic value.

The research and advice that we provided ensured that the scheme was approved by the council conservation officer and subsequently sent to planning committee where it was fully supported despite 60 objections from the community, two previous refusals and appeal dismissals. The client was able to demonstrate that the chosen design had no detrimental effect on the conservation area.

The final scheme is based on the area’s decades long relationship with the Barratt sweet company. In addition to the new dwellings, the client has created a community wildlife garden for residents to enjoy.

Following years of refusals, we overcame all previous objections to allow the client to deliver high-quality properties with landscaping, which vastly improved the appearance of the site, as seen from surrounding properties and which didn’t threaten the Victorian development in the area.
